STAAS Seat Design 2018 - Won 2nd Place

The Brief

As more people take to the skies, aircraft seats are evolving into personal living spaces. We’re challenging creative minds to envision design concepts that revolutionize the economy class seats. Tell us what you think is in store for the next generation of aircraft seats. Design concepts should demonstrate progress and significant improvements to what’s out there.

Tackling the Brief

Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the popularity of Low-cost Carriers (LCC) – airlines that prioritize cutting cost and maximizing efficiency. However, with greater purchasing power, many passengers now consider much more than cheap flight tickets when choosing their airlines. In order to gain customer loyalty, airlines can afford to focus more on the comfort of passengers.

Our design aims to optimize inflight comfort for economy class passengers by endowing them with increased privacy and personal space options within the crammed environment. The addition of customizable features enable passengers to personalize their flight experience in a way that best caters to their own needs.

current trends of economy flights and our design objectives

The Project

Privo focuses on the key pain points of economy class passengers: the lack of legroom space, privacy, and the one-size-fits-all design of current economy seats that cannot meet the diverse needs of all passengers. It empowers passengers with more control over their in-flight experience and comfort.

The newly implemented features in this design are customisable for the individual. It includes an adjustable head-arm-rest, improved seat reclining position, additional light fixture on the seat back as well as grooves on the table to prop an electronic device.

proposed new head and arm rest design

The HAR is a height-adjustable feature that slides along the side frame of each airplane seat. It consists of two components: a head rest and an arm rest that can be either seamlessly connected or detached. It functions as a support for passengers to rest their heads, providing them with a more comfortable position for resting or sleeping. Passengers can slide the HAR downwards along the vertical rail to interact with neighbouring passengers, or leave the head rest fixed at eye level for more privacy. Flexible and customisable, the position of the HAR can be adjusted to meet individual preferences.

proposed dynamic reclining feature

Seat recline has always been a problematic issue among airline passengers - often resulting in reduced leg room for the passenger behind the reclined seat. Our design incorporates a new hinge position that allows the bottom half of the airplane seat to slide forward during the recline, creating more leg-room for the rear passenger. This intervention offers a win-win situation for all passengers, increasing everyone’s comfort without negative impacts (or feelings).
